Job Details

POLITICO Europe is looking for a Trade reporter to be based in our Brussels newsroom.

Role and Responsibilities:

Working in a three-person team, the reporter will be at the heart of one of the most high-profile and contentious global policy issues. The successful candidate will play a crucial role in our reporting of the EU’s trade negotiations with partners ranging from Australia to India. Europe’s often tense relations with Washington and Beijing are front and center.

Trade underlies many of today’s biggest political clashes – from South America to the South China Sea - and the successful candidate will have a strong appetite for global news reporting, both in EU institutions and in international gatherings such as the G7. The beat involves working closely with other policy teams, our sister publication in the U.S., and covering institutions such as the WTO. A key part of the job involves developing and working sources within diplomatic circles and navigating the political interests at play.

Trade increasingly overlaps with Europe’s priorities in technology, tax, the environment and industry, meaning any prospective candidate should have an interest in these wider themes. On the ecological side, many EU countries are now demanding that the bloc’s trade agenda should become greener and are refusing to ratify deals that they believe could lead to destruction of the rainforests. In terms of industrial policy, trade defenses against China are a priority, and much of our coverage focuses on how Europe contends with the rise and rise of China Inc.

Beyond the big political showdowns, trade is also a highly technical topic and our reporters are expected to delve deep into the complexities of anti-dumping cases and WTO panels. Alongside breaking news, the reporter will jointly author a must-read morning newsletter. The reporter will also be a public face of POLITICO at events and panels on topics related to trade.

Qualifications:

  • Track record of rigorous reporting and scoops;
  • Strong understanding of how policy is made and influenced by people within governments, lobby groups and industry;
  • Excellent English-language writing skills;
  • Ability to work under pressure and on deadline;
  • Knowledge of other European languages is a strong plus.

Equal Opportunity:

It is POLITICO's policy to provide equal employment opportunity to all qualified individuals without regard to race, color, religion, national origin, gender, age or any other characteristic protected by local laws and regulations.
