Job Details

The Thomson Reuters Foundation is seeking an experienced tech correspondent in Eastern Europe to join our award-winning news team, , as we prepare to launch our new, exciting, digital platform.

We are looking for a multimedia journalist with excellent news judgment and writing skills. If you think deeply and read widely about how data gathering, surveillance, big tech and AI are impacting people and societies, particularly in Eastern Europe, we want to hear from you.

In a world where data and technology are increasingly pervasive,  you endeavour to uncover how data, algorithms and AI are being used for or against social well-being - from the right to privacy to access to information - and look at how people, governments and companies are adapting and responding to new technological challenges.

Based in Eastern Europe, you will work with the Thomson Reuters Foundation's global team to produce unique, impactful stories that raise awareness about a raft of issues on ethical and social impacts of technology, and how digital rights impact human rights.

You will stay ahead of the curve on legal and policy changes and technological developments and build a network of some of the most important and influential voices in this field in the region.

Your output will include exclusive original stories in the form of enterprise, analysis, features and long-reads. At the same time, you are agile enough to jump on a developing international story and bring a tech angle to it.
You know how to write for digital audiences, always think of multimedia possibilities for your stories, and come to the table with innovative ideas for your storytelling.

You’re ideally fluent in several Eastern European languages, are easy to collaborate with, and thrive in both team and solitary settings.

This position can be based in any major city in Eastern Europe.

As our Tech Correspondent in Eastern Europe you will:

  • Contribute to a global file covering the impact of digital technology on human rights
  • Initiate and write a range of deep and engaging stories and investigations of wide interest
  • Help write and produce multimedia stories that highlight new angles on topics related to digital rights and human rights that break new ground
  • Help develop a network of expert sources, freelancers and op-ed contributors
  • Collaborate with our Climate and Inclusive Economies pillars to produce cross-pollinating stories
  • Consistently meet deadlines and file concise, clean copy

To be our Tech Correspondent in Eastern Europe you will likely have:

  • At least 5 years of journalism experience, including a proven track record of writing about technology and digital rights
  • A good network of contacts within the tech and digital rights sectors, including experts, influencers, organisations, and other stakeholders in the region
  • Aptitude for identifying, understanding and explaining data-based stories
  • Versatile and engaging writing style able to adapt to digital and traditional media audiences
  • Some familiarity with multimedia storytelling, including video or audio production and photography
  • Demonstrated ability to report on underrepresented communities and capture diverse voices
  • A strong understanding of social media and digital audiences
  • Excellent spoken and written English
  • Fluency in multiple Eastern European languages (preferred)
  • An ability to meet deadlines and work independently

Please note, the deadline for applications is Friday 1st July 2022.
