Job Description:

The Wall Street Journal is looking for a Global Energy Editor to lead our coverage of the energy business, an industry in upheaval due to factors from war and politics to climate change and shifting investor preferences.

You will oversee a team of reporters covering companies throughout the energy chain, including the oil majors, shale producers, refiners, pipeline builders and gas stations as well as utilities, wind and solar energy generators, coal and nuclear companies.

You will be expected to lead reporters to deliver strong and scoopy news coverage and agenda-setting enterprise. We expect you to take a broad view of the remit and contribute to topics ranging from individuals' energy usage and bills, to policy decisions at every level of government as well as shifts in the economy and geopolitics that shape energy supply and demand.

Based in Houston or London, you will play a critical role in our coverage of energy as part of our broader business, finance and economics coverage. You will work closely with colleagues focused on markets, climate, economics and politics.

You will:

  • Set a news agenda for the Journal's energy coverage, leading reporters from the energy team and beyond to dominate the story of rapid change in a hugely important part of the economy.
  • Identify and lead coverage of the most-important and interesting companies in the sector, ensuring that we are well sourced and lead on the most-important business stories.
  • Manage a team of reporters, helping them deliver work that distinguishes the Journal and grow to fulfill their professional potential.
  • Shape coverage of the global energy transition, including the current supply shock that is fueling inflation in the broader economy and the rise of clean technology;
  • Be a crucial member of the editorial leadership of our corporate coverage.
  • Work closely with other coverage areas, including colleagues covering markets, climate change, the economy, U.S. politics and the war in Ukraine.

You have:

  • A track record of leading coverage of companies including scoops and enterprise.
  • An enthusiasm for daily news and competing at it
  • A demonstrated ability to identify compelling story veins, guide complex coverage and deliver in depth enterprise work.
  • A high news metabolism and sound judgment.
  • Eagerness to embrace data, visuals and a variety of storytelling formats.
  • A track record of successfully managing reporters.

The position will be based in Houston or London and report to Business Editor Jamie Heller.

To apply, please submit your resume and a cover letter explaining how you would approach the job.

The Journal's reporters, editors, developers, and audio and visual journalists create important and impactful stories, firmly rooted in fact and adhering to the highest ethical standards. We report without fear or bias, and we maintain a proper sense of perspective, detachment and objectivity in our reporting.
