Newsweek is seeking a full-time Science Editor to join our London team.

The Science Editor will be able to source, pitch, write and edit news and feature articles based around current affairs, health, nature, popular science, space and trending topics.

They will be able to put a science spin on a major news story. The successful candidate will be able to develop stories where science intersects with news and politics.

They should be able to use social media and search platforms to identify trends and conceive original articles for an American audience. They will conduct interviews and forward-plan for events.

They will have a strong understanding of digital journalism and the needs of a fast-paced newsroom. They will have significant experience in an editing role at a reputable organization. They will have experience managing a team of reporters.

The candidate does not need scientific qualifications, but an eye for scientific detail is a practical necessity.

The candidate will be responsible for ensuring high-quality coverage that is accurate, fair, and conforms to accepted standards of journalism. They will ensure reporters are producing exclusive and high-quality features that enhance the Newsweek brand.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Manage a team of reporters.
  • Pitch, research and assign original stories and features.
  • Edit copy, checking facts and sources, to ensure content meets Newsweek’s expected quality standards.
  • Forward planning.
  • Write articles if required.
  • Perform any other reasonable duties as necessary to meet the needs of the business.

Person Specification:

  • Detailed knowledge of key scientific topics, including nature, space, health and Earth sciences.
  • An interest in U.S. politics.
  • Significant experience in an editing role covering scientific topics for a reputable organization.
  • Experience managing a team of reporters.
  • Capable of working to tight deadlines.
