Alliance is looking for a trained editor with experience of online editing, strong digital skills and an interest in philanthropy.

Alliance magazine is a nonprofit media organisation that has been providing coverage of global philanthropy and social investment for 27 years. Alliance has a strong and growing team in place and a trusted track record of philanthropy coverage and an extensive global network.

The Digital Editor’s principal responsibility is to directly manage the digital strategy and content of the organization and to work with the Executive Editor to maintain high editorial quality.

Content production:

  • Primary lead for all online coverage of the global philanthropy sector
  • Editorial lead for delivery of Alliance Extra – weekly long-form commissioned content including analysis and interviews
  • Editorial lead for commissioned opinion pieces for alliancemagazine.org
  • Management and delivery of our ClimatePhilanthropy2030 initiative – committed to dedicated weekly coverage of philanthropy’s response to climate change
  • Management of budget & personnel related to freelance contributions to ClimatePhilanthropy2030 initiative
  • Line management of News Editor and working with them to deliver daily global philanthropy news
  • Management of our regional representatives programme (including personnel and budget) to coordinate a network of Alliance representatives across the globe and ensure their insights and connections are reflected across our content
  • Assist with conceptualisation and planning of our quarterly editorial focuses and regularly engaging with our Editorial Advisory Board
  • Curate Alliance online pages – a quarterly round-up of the best of our website for print
  • Working with News Editor to curate Global updates – a quarterly magazine spread bringing together the best of online news and views from around the world
  • Be responsible for the editorial construction and chairing of regular digital events
  • Management of freelance editorial support to aid the work outlined above
  • Attend weekly editorial meetings and act in accordance with editorial guidelines and standards

Technology and media engagement:

  • Monitor performance of online content with the goal of growing our audience
  • Liaise with Communications, Networks & Membership Manager to develop our website, and use of graphics and infographics, to ensure it meets readers’ needs
  • Maintain IT knowledge to ensure Alliance is up to date with new trends and technologies in publishing and communications

Relationship building and philanthropy sector knowledge:

  • Develop expansive knowledge of the global philanthropy sector, the people and organisations in that space, and keep up with the latest trends and developments
  • Maintain regular contact with key people across the global philanthropy sector
  • Attend and cover sector events and form productive relationships with our readers
  • Liaise with Communications, Networks & Membership Manager to ensure that the voice of our members is reflected in editorial content

Essential:

  • Experience in online publishing and news gathering
  • High level of digital editing skills and experience including commissioning and working with authors
  • Strong interpersonal skills including the ability to form strong relationships with all those involved in the running of Alliance: including staff team, editorial and APT boards, freelance editors and designers, and contributors and partners
  • Strong organisational skills including working with multiple articles and authors at once in a systematic and coherent manner
  • Intellectual curiosity about philanthropy taking a keen interest in current affairs and showing awareness of how global events and trends might affect philanthropy

Desirable:

  • Experience working in the philanthropy sector and/or knowledge of the global philanthropy field
  • Enjoy working in a small team and fast-paced environment
  • Willingness to travel and work alongside people in different geographies, backgrounds and contexts

Recruitment

Candidates will be shortlisted in mid-June, with interviews taking place on 26 June. The fixed term for this contract is 1 August 2023 – 30 August 2024.
