Job Details

POLITICO Europe is looking for an experienced policy reporter to be based in Brussels.

The reporter will steer our coverage of one of the most colorful and contentious topics in Europe: agricultural and food policy. The successful candidate will also play a crucial role in our reporting of trade deals, Brexit and the internal market.

Food and farming often lie at the heart of some of the EU’s biggest political clashes. This is a diverse beat that goes way beyond fights over dole-outs from the Common Agricultural Policy, and would suit a strong writer.

The coverage ranges from health topics such as the use of glyphosate, to environmental issues such as the reintroduction of wolves.

A key part of the job will involve navigating the complex relations between policymakers and corporate giants in the agri-food sector such as Syngenta, Bayer, Carrefour and Tesco.

Agricultural interests are also fundamental to the EU trade agenda and this role will require the development of sources within teams negotiating EU deals with the U.S., Latin America and, soon, Britain.

The successful candidate will have an eye for detail and a track record of rigorous reporting and scoops.

He or she should be a team-worker, with an understanding of how policy is made and influenced by people within governments, lobby groups and industry. An understanding of EU policymaking, and experience of reporting in Brussels or elsewhere in the EU27, would also be an advantage.

Agriculture and food policy are highly significant across the whole Continent and we are looking for a reporter who can connect the dots between Brussels and the competing interests of the member countries. European languages would, therefore, be a considerable advantage.

This reporter will also be the public face of POLITICO at events and panels on topics that have ranged from digital farming to the single market.

Qualifications:

  • College degree or equivalent
  • At least two years’ newsroom experience
  • Written and verbal fluency in English
  • Fluency in other European languages a strong plus

Equal Opportunity

It is POLITICO's policy to provide equal employment opportunity to all qualified individuals without regard to race, color, religion, national origin, gender, age or any other characteristic protected by local laws and regulations.
